Graveyard vs. Cemetery

I love words. If you’re here, then I venture to guess that you do, too.

Have you ever actually paid mind to the difference – or similarity – of the words graveyard and cemetery? I hadn’t, until tonight.

I stumbled across this little article on the ever-scrolling Facebook newsfeed today when I should have been working on revising my short story for class. (It’s due at midnight; I like a challenge.)

I don’t suppose I ever gave much thought to the purpose behind the two different names for what is essentially the same place, yet here we are. I think I’ve always used cemetery when speaking of either, anyway. Things like this fascinate me; as a writer and a reader, I’m a natural world-lover. Who knows when the time will arise when the perfect word will matter? 😉
